Can I transfer my phone number from a normal 2G phone to a 3G phone on the same network?

I've got an old motorola phone on the orange network and want to buy a sony ericsson k800i which is 3G enabled so has a 3G sim card. I guess this means I can't just put my old sim in the new phone but I'd like to keep my old number if possible. I'm staying on the same network. Does anyone know if this can be done ?

  1. yes just contact your service provider
  2. Yes just pop into a shop and they'll give you a new sim and then transfer the data from your old sim. O2 did this for me last year took about 2 hours but they tell you it can take up to 24
  3. Yeah. You can use your old sim in the new handset. assuming your old sim was a 2G sim and you put it in 3G handset it would mean you can only use the 2G services i.e you couldnt do video calling. Contact your network provider and ask them to send you a 3G sim. once they send you this they will transfer your number onto the new sim. Then you'll have all your 3G services.
